I’m not sure what drove me to do this, but I wound up looking into one of my old stories, Awakening, on the interwebs. I did a quick Google search, not expecting to find anything. I wrote the story a long time ago and I let a site use it as a freebie give away. It’s not a story I would ever offer for payment. I was still a newbie erotica writer at that point.
Surprise, surprise, I found a review. And, boy, was it brutal.
My favorite part was this:
The author’s actual style of writing was OK, but I can’t help but draw into question her command of the English language
And this also gave me the warm fuzzies:
E. D. Beale seems to have the imagination for creating a promising premise, but in my opinion, her writing skills need some serious polish
That was probably very true at the time. I can only hope that I’ve improved a little, at the very least.
In case you’re curious, here are other reviews from this story–some okay, some horrible. Here is the link for Goodreads and here’s DeSeRt RoSe’s review and this is a little something from All Romance.
So I was poking the bear. I have to admit to feeling a little dinged. I’ve never been particularly good at taking negative criticism, but I’ve definitely gotten better over the years. I mean, this is what it is. Learn from it and move on.
Still, as my hubby put it, even though it was a bad review, it’s still pretty cool to have been reviewed at all. It kind of puts a fire under my ass to get back to working on the ridiculous amount of stories I’ve started and never completed. It’s at least six stories at this time. I think. Hell, there could be more for all I know. Worst (or best, depending on perspective) yet, I always have a new story brewing in my head.
Anyway, I mentioned I’ll have a few Quickies posted here from time to time. In fact, I’m feeling the urge right now so one should be popping up relatively soon.
All you can do is grow and grow I shall. Not everyone will like what I have to write. And for the first time in my life, that’s okay with me.
